Shotgun

Shotgun

The shotgun single is a rectangular house consists of three to five rooms in a row with no hallways. A shotgun double consists of two shotgun singles under one roof and separated by a middle wall (pictured above). The difference can be determined by the number of bays, shotgun single has two or three bays while a shotgun double has four.

This space efficient house was named the “shotgun” since a bullet can travel from the front to the back doors without hitting anything. Sometimes a second story can be found in the rear of some shotguns and is referred to as a camelback. Shotguns can be found in many different styles. Including bungalow, neoclassical revival, bracket style.
