Denise Henry

Denise Henry

Neighborhood: Mid-City
Architecture Style: Shotgun

When Hurricane Katrina forced Denise Henry and her family to evacuate New Orleans to Texas, they did not anticipate the journey that was ahead of them. Her big yellow home, which she shares with her brother Ulysses, in the Mid-City neighborhood flooded with ten feet of water. Though they used their Road Home funds wisely, they suffered contractor fraud and the repairs were not completed on their house. In June 2009, Ms. Henry learned about Rebuilding Together New Orleans from a brochure. Now over four years after Hurricane Katrina, the Henrys are almost ready to come back home.

Ms. Henry, a New Orleans native, bought her home in 1998. She is a nurse at a local hospital and loves spending time with her daughter and granddaughter, who will live with her once her home is rebuilt. Currently, Ms. Henry is staying with a friend in Algiers Point while Ulysses lives with his daughter across Lake Ponchartrain in Slidell. The two siblings can not wait to be reunited and look forward to sitting on the front porch of their Mid-City home and watching the neighborhood children play.

Although RTNO is working on the Henry’s home, more funding is still needed to complete the repairs.
