Enox Ragland

Enox Ragland

Neighborhood: Gentilly
Architecture Style: Bungalow

Originally from North Carolina, Mr. Enox Ragland moved to New Orleans in 1984 where he raised his son and spent many years working in a lumberyard until his arthritis and high blood pressure forced him to retire. In March 2005, Mr. Ragland bought a cozy house in the Pontchartrain Park subdivision of the Gentilly neighborhood and says he was excited to be a part of this historically significant neighborhood. Built after World War II, Pontchartrain Park is an important part of New Orleans’ history as it was New Orleans’ first suburban-style subdivision developed by and for middle class African Americans during the Jim Crow era. Mr. Ragland quickly began to make his house a home and he fell in love with Pontchartrain Park’s beauty and tranquility.

Only 5 months after settling into his new home, Mr. Ragland was forced to evacuate to Lafayette, LA to avoid Hurricane Katrina. His house was destroyed by 12 feet of water and he lived in Houston until he was able to return to New Orleans in 2006. Luckily, Mr. Ragland was able to rebuild most of his house with the money he received from insurance and Road Home, but there is still work needed to be done. Though extremely thankful that he has been able to get as far as he has in the rebuilding process, Mr. Ragland misses the neighborhood’s former beauty. Rebuilding Together New Orleans is looking forward to finishing Mr. Ragland’s home and is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of restoring Pontchartrain Park to its original prestige.

Mr. Ragland’s home will be one of RTNO’s Fifty for Five project sites. Fifty for Five is a commemorative event that will highlight the rebuilding efforts in New Orleans and recognize the fifth Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. This volunteer event will be held August 25-28, 2010 throughout the Gentilly neighborhood, including Pontchartrain Park. Please contact RTNO if you are interested in donating or volunteering and be sure to visit the Fifty for Five website for more information.
