Every volunteer has a life outside of volunteering. For students coming down for Spring Break, life probably includes spending time cramming, procrastinating, Facebooking and more procrastinating.

As an AmeriCorps volunteer from a small town in upstate New York, the thought of dedicating a year of my life to serve a community 1200 miles away was both exciting and unnerving.

NEW ORLEANS — For a group volunteers in Hollygrove, rebuilding five Katrina-damaged homes is something they made a point of doing while in New Orleans.

This year, Rebuilding Together New Orleans is partnering with Nonprofits Count and the U.S. Census Bureau to inform New Orleans residents of the importance of completing their 2010 Census data.

The Saints aren’t the only ones who are lifting the spirits of New Orleanians this year. Among the throngs of fans in the Who Dat Nation, over one thousand Americorps are currently committing a year of service to the betterment of the Crescent City. This is one of their stories.

I had never seen a neighborhood map of New Orleans until my first day of work at Rebuilding Together New Orleans. This would be an otherwise unsurprising revelation for many, save for the fact that I am a New Orleans native.

Rebuilding Together New Orleans is looking to hire licensed and insured general contractors, plumbers, electricians and master carpenters to rebuild homes for low-income homeowners. All qualified applicants will be considered for paid contract work.
