AmeriCorps Summer Associates

Through AmeriCorps and Rebuilding Together, Summer Associates will be responsible for assisting homeowners with home repair by leading volunteers and working within a team of AmeriCorps members and Rebuilding Together staff.

Rebuilding Together New Orleans, a local affiliate of the national non-profit-Rebuilding Together, is a continuing volunteer effort to improve the quality of life of low income homeowners, particularly those who are elderly, disabled, or single head of households with minor children, through home repair and revitalization of New Orleans’ neighborhoods. Rebuilding Together currently works alongside neighborhood associations in the following neighborhoods; Broadmoor, Hollygrove, St Roch, Treme, Gentilly, Mid-City and Holy Cross.

AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country’s critical needs in disaster relief, education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve with more than 2,000 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and community organizations. Since 1994, more than 400,000 men and women have provided needed assistance to millions of Americans across the nation through their AmeriCorps service.

Duties will include some or all of the following:
+ Perform home repair duties (such as installation of insulation, sheetrock patching, painting, minor carpentry, cabinetry, tiling etc.) Training, when needed, will be provided by RT

+ Lead volunteer teams on various projects

+ Assist in the preparation of Katrina Anniversary project by preparing house projects for volunteers, canvassing to determine neighborhood needs, and supporting field staff in event logistics

+ Apply green rebuilding practices to home rebuilding projects

+ Work as a team with all staff in all aspects of project management to ensure successful rebuild events

+ Support warehouse staff through material staging, preparation, and organization for rebuilding projects

+ Assist in obtaining and delivering supplies for various projects

+ Work alongside AmeriCorps National and NCCC teams

Positions begin on July 5 and conclude on August 29. Only applicants able to fulfill the entire 8 week service commitment will be considered. Hours of service are generally M-F 7:30-5:00 with occasional Saturdays.

Applicants must be able to provide their own transportation to the Rebuilding Together warehouse located at 2801 Marais St. Housing and Food are not provided.

Must be at least 18 yrs old with a High School diploma or equivalent and a U.S. Citizen, National or Legal Resident. Ability to work outside for 9-10 hours at a time. Prior construction experience is preferred but not required. Rebuilding Together New Orleans is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Compensation:
AmeriCorps stipend, to be calculated based on local living expenses and dispersed every two weeks. Summer Associates will also receive either $1,000 education award or $200 summer stipend upon completion of service.
