Meet our Volunteers: 5 Questions with Mark Artis

5 Questions: Mark Artis

Mark Artis, Deutsche Bank

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am an executive with Deutsche Bank in New York City. I’m married and live in Brooklyn. I believe that active philanthropy is an essential part of living a full and rewarding life.

2) What motivated you to volunteer with Rebuilding Together New Orleans?

RTNO was recommended to me by Habitat for Humanity. Habitat was fully booked for the week I had organized and they sent us your way. I have stuck with RTNO every year since.

3) What have you learned or gained from helping to rebuild?

I’ve learned that there is going to be a lot of rebuilding work to be done for the foreseeable future in New Orleans. I also had the opportunity to bring down over 20+ corporate volunteers over the past 4 years, many of whom had never experienced all that New Orleans has to offer and to have helped them understand why the city is so vitally important to the fabric of American culture. Finally I’ve gained a deeper insight into what it means to truly help people in need. There is something about the tangible aspect of the rebuilding experience that makes it more personally meaningful than simply writing a check.

4) What has been your best experience in New Orleans?

Meeting Roman Abramovich (owner of Chelsea FC & world’s 8th richest man) at 2:30am on Frenchmen St. in 2009…I’m a big Chelsea fan. Hanging out backstage last Jazzfest Friday and meeting the guys from Mumford & Sons and Avett Brothers.

5) What is next for you?

Well it’s back to the daily grind in New York but hopefully with enough New Orleans bonhomie to keep me going until the next visit.
