October Build 2010
Rebuilding Together New Orleans needs you!
Every year local companies and organizations come together with Rebuilding Together New Orleans for our annual October Build Event. Rebuilding Together New Orleans started out as a one-day neighborhood revitalization program in 1988 by the Preservation Resource Center called “Christmas in October.” In order to honor the programs origins, RTNO hosts this now four-day event where members of the local community come together to devote their time and resources to their neighbors in need. RTNO started in 1988 when the Preservation Resource Center instituted a one-day neighborhood revitalization pilot program in the Lower Garden District. Named Christmas in October, it was implemented to address the needs of existing homeowners, namely the elderly and disabled, for whom home repair had become unmanageable.
After Hurricane Katrina, RTNO modified its mission to aid those displaced by the storm. Instead of working solely on smaller projects, RTNO began to focus on the total renovation and rebuilding of storm-damaged homes. RTNO’s service area also expanded to include seven neighborhoods in Orleans Parish. Since the storm, RTNO has restored the homes of over 235 low-income homeowners, thanks to the support of dozens of partners locally and from around the country. Approximately 14,000 volunteers have contributed over $5.6 million worth of labor to help rebuild New Orleans.
Volunteer teams are asked to designate a House Captain who will oversee the workdays on EACH site. Each site can accommodate up to 25 volunteers. RTNO will provide site selection, staff support, on-site port-o-lets, any supplies and tools necessary, and an orientation for House Captains.
Last year with 33 volunteer teams we worked on 23 homes. It is only with the support of community partners that we have been able to make our program such a success and have a lasting impact on our beloved city.
