Rebuilding Together New Orleans (RTNO) and AmeriCorps
Rebuilding Together New Orleans has been partnering with AmeriCorps since 2007. Each year a group of full-time volunteers have worked alongside the RTNO staff to implement programs, organize volunteers and work on houses. To learn more about these programs, please visit the AmeriCorps website.
Each year, AmeriCorps offers more than 70,000 opportunities for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve through a network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups. Areas of service range from community development, providing youth mentoring and helping to protect the environment.
RTNO currently hosts AmeriCorps members from the following programs:
AmeriCorps – State Direct
RTNO operates a state direct AmeriCorps grant in partnership with the Volunteer Louisiana Commission. The VLC is a body that oversees all state formula dollars for the state of Louisiana. The commission is a volunteer body supported by dedicated staff within the office of the Lt. Governor.
AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America)
AmeriCorps VISTA provides full-time members to community organizations and public agencies to create and expand programs that build capacity and ultimately bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty.
AmeriCorps Direct – Minimum Time Member (300 Hours)
Starting in early June, Rebuilding Together New Orleans will enroll 15 members to undergo a summer service term. Its perfect for local high school students interested in learning about the construction industry or individuals that are looking to spend a summer giving back to families in need.
Available AmeriCorps Positions:
AmeriCorps House Captains (Starting May and September 2022):
AmeriCorps members serving with RTNO get to see first-hand how the work they’re doing positively impacts the community. The tasks House Captains complete improve the quality of life for all of RTNO’s homeowners, whether it’s through the addition of a wheelchair ramp to allow homeowner mobility and independence, or exterior weatherization repairs to lower utility builds and keep a home clean and healthy. They complete hands-on repairs as part of prep work or punch list for special projects, and complete repairs in volunteers’ absence. On project days, AmeriCorps House Captains work with volunteers from all backgrounds and skill levels to complete a variety of construction activities. Wherever possible, they teach and empower volunteers to learn new skills and safely implement them on the worksite.
AmeriCorps VISTA Youth Development Coordinators (starting Jan 2023)
New Orleans has the third largest population of opportunity youth
in the United States. A hostile combination of low-wage jobs and an affordable housing crisis makes it incredibly difficult for these youths to obtain jobs that pay the higher wages necessary to live affordably. The VISTA Youth Development Coordinators will work together to implement a youth workforce development (YWD) program that provides participants with job training as part of RTNO’s approach to alleviating poverty among multiple generations in New Orleans. Focusing on curriculum research and design, program implementation, and volunteer educator recruitment, our VISTAs are a vital piece in continuing a YWD program.
