COVID-19 Event Impacts and Safety Information
Rebuilding Together New Orleans is committed to holding a safe event that meets all potential city and state COVID-19 restrictions. Given the fluid and frequent changes to these guidelines, if we are unable to gather as planned, the boil portion of the event will be reformatted as a drive-thru with limited boil team space. In accordance with Rebuilding Together’s volunteer guidelines, all project sites will be capped at 10 volunteers.
All event-goes should review the safety information (left) before registering a team or participating.
We have taken enhanced health and safety measures for the protection of our staff, homeowners, and volunteers. An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. Those who do not comply with posted health and safety measures will be asked to leave.
Beginnings of the Build and Boil
In 2019, we hosted our first annual Build and Boil Block Party! With the support of more than 200 volunteers from local businesses and corporations, we were able to help 6 homeowners within New Orleans, all in our own neighborhood. Volunteers spent the morning replacing rotten weatherboards, safely removing lead paint, giving home exteriors fresh coats of paint and installing exterior handrails and interior safety grab bars in bathrooms.
Teams spent the afternoon boiling 899 pounds of crawfish for our first warehouse block party. The block party was free to the public, and was full of fun for all ages, including crawfish races and peeling contests. 20 teams competed in a crawfish boiling competition, with Gallo Mechanical winning the coveted Boil of the Block title.
Thanks to our sponsors, volunteers, and community members, we were able to raise $20,000 in 2019 for future projects across New Orleans! We’re excited to see what our [Re]Builders can do in 2021
