About
Our Story
Stronger Homes. Stronger Neighborhoods.
Rebuilding Together New Orleans began in 1988 as a one-day neighborhood revitalization effort launched by the Preservation Resource Center in the Lower Garden District. Called Christmas in October, the pilot was inspired by the national “Christmas in April” model and created to meet a clear need: helping older adults and people with disabilities who were no longer able to keep up with critical home repairs.
After Hurricane Katrina, our work evolved to meet the moment. We shifted into renovation and rebuilding of storm-damaged homes, reinvesting in New Orleans’ existing housing stock so families could return home. That focus helped support recovery while also protecting the character and stability of the city’s neighborhoods.
In 2019, we became an independent 501(c)(3) organization. Today, we continue to advance the Rebuilding Together network’s vision of a safe and healthy home for everyone, while staying ready to respond to hurricanes and disasters, and staying committed to the long-term recovery and revitalization of New Orleans neighborhoods.
