Disaster Response

Prepared before. Present during. Rebuilding after.

When hurricanes or other disasters strike, homes and neighborhoods can be transformed in an instant. Rebuilding Together New Orleans has a decades-long commitment to disaster response, helping families return home, restoring safe housing, and building systems that keep communities strong before, during, and after crises.

Our Disaster Response Work

Long-Term Recovery

Since Hurricane Katrina, RTNO has completed more than 1,000 home rebuilds for families displaced or damaged by the storm, restoring safe, healthy housing that enables neighbors to stay in their community with dignity.

Current Efforts

We continue to respond to disasters in the Gulf Region, focusing on critical projects like roofing repairs and other urgent home improvements for qualifying homeowners affected by storms such as Hurricane Ida.

Partnership-Driven Impact

As part of the National Association of Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD), RTNO works alongside local and national partners to coordinate response efforts efficiently and equitably when disaster strikes.

Building a Future of Preparedness

United Way of Southeast Louisiana Resiliency Center

In 2025, Rebuilding Together New Orleans and the United Way of Southeast Louisiana unveiled the United Way of Southeast Louisiana Resiliency Center, a storm-hardened regional hub for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. This permanent facility brings trusted nonprofits together under one roof to strengthen community readiness and response capacity before the next storm hits.

The Resiliency Center helps New Orleanians prepare, respond, and recover by:

  • Hosting disaster-preparedness workshops and trainings

  • Coordinating rapid response operations during emergencies

  • Serving as a staging site for supplies and volunteer deployment

  • Providing access to support services that build long-term household resilience

  • Partnering with organizations like United Way SELA, HandsOn New Orleans, Ride NOLA, New Orleans ToolBank, and LA GreenCorps to streamline efforts and reduce service gaps.United Way of Southeast Louisiana
